Why I built a tracking app – and why a falcon was the trigger

Sometimes the best ideas don’t come from sitting at a desk – they come from a conversation. In this case, with a friend who is a falconer.

If you’re not familiar with falconry: a falconer needs to document his bird’s weight every day, record feeding, note rest days, check crop status and log successful hunts. That might sound manageable – but in practice, it’s a surprisingly complex task. My friend had been trying to manage it all with notes, spreadsheets and various apps that eventually shut down – and the data was gone. So he asked me if I could build something that actually fits his needs. An app where he defines his own fields – weight in grams, feed type, rest day, crop status, catch result – and that supports his daily tracking instead of getting in the way.

That was the moment heidenreich log was born.

From falcon to universal logbook

The longer I worked on the solution for my friend, the clearer it became: the problem behind it is much bigger than falconry. It affects anyone who wants to track something regularly – and can’t find the right app for it.

Sound familiar? You want to track your blood pressure. Or your weight. Or your car’s mileage. So you look for an app – and find hundreds. One for blood pressure. One for a driving log. One for calories. One for meter readings. A separate app for every topic, each with its own account, its own logic, its own layout.

At some point you’ve got five apps on your phone that all do essentially the same thing: store a value at a point in time. Just each in its own, often unnecessarily complicated way.

So I turned the falconry tool into a universal logbook – one that adapts to you, not the other way around.

The concept is simple

You create a type – for example “Blood Pressure” with the fields Systolic, Diastolic and Pulse. Then you create a log with that type, give it a name, pick an image – done. From now on, you can add new entries with a single tap. Date and time are set automatically, default values are suggested. No fuss, no overhead.

The same works for everything else: weight, calories, fuel stops, working hours, plant care, mood journal – you decide what to track and what the fields are called.

So you don’t have to start from scratch, heidenreich log comes with a set of ready-made templates: blood pressure, weight, blood sugar, temperature, medications, sleep, driving log, fuel log, meter readings – and of course falconry. You can use them right away, customise them or create entirely new types from the ground up.

What always bothered me about other solutions

Two things mainly: first, the barrier. Many apps make logging more complicated than it needs to be. Too many steps, too many required fields, too many distractions. If entering data takes longer than the thing you’re trying to document, something is off.

Second, data ownership. Why do I need to create an account just to note down my blood pressure? Why should my most personal health data end up on some server I know nothing about?

With heidenreich log, all data stays locally on your device. No account, no registration, no cloud requirement. If you want a backup, you can set one up via Google Drive or iCloud – but you decide if and when.

Spot trends instead of just collecting values

Recording values is one thing. But the real benefit comes when you start seeing patterns. That’s why heidenreich log offers a chart view alongside the classic list view. There you can see your trends at a glance – with default values shown as reference lines so you immediately know where you stand.

Especially with health data, this can make a real difference. Not as a diagnostic tool – that’s what doctors are for. But as an honest mirror that shows you how your values develop over time. And my falconer friend can see at a glance how his bird’s weight has changed over weeks – a crucial factor for a successful hunt.

Fair and straightforward

heidenreich log is free to use – with ads. If the ads bother you, you can remove them permanently with a one-time payment. No subscription, no hidden costs, no fine print. That’s how it should be.

Who is heidenreich log for?

For anyone who wants to track something regularly – without having to fight their way through complicated apps. Whether you want to keep an eye on your blood pressure, maintain a driving log, track your expenses, look after your birds of prey or simply want to know when you last dewormed the cat: heidenreich log gives you a simple, flexible tool for exactly that.

At the end of the day – like with all my apps – it comes down to the same idea: software should make everyday life easier, not harder. Less effort, more clarity. Simply track what matters.

And sometimes it takes a falcon to make something like this happen.
